Different environmental conditions, particularly daylength and intensity of natural light, may influence the ability of shiftworkers to adapt to the abrupt phase-shifts of 24 h time cues imposed by the nature of their work. We have investigated this problem in terms of the circadian rhythm of the pineal hormone melatonin in nightshift workers on the British Antarctic Survey Base at Halley (75° South). Melatonin production was assessed by measurement of its major urinary metabolite 6-sulphatoxymelatonin (aMT6s) by radio-immunoassay in sequential urine samples collected for 48 h at weekly intervals. The acrophase of the melatonin rhythm was significantly delayed from 5.22 h.min to 14.54 h.min (summer) and 8.73 h.min to 13.23 h.min (winter) during a week of night-shift work. Readaptation of the rhythm following night-shift work was markedly slower during the Antarctic winter taking 3 weeks compared to summer where the baseline phase position was re-established after 1 week. Morning and evening treatment (08.00–09.00 h, 16.00–17.00 h) with bright (> 2500 lux) full spectrum white light did not significantly modify this phenomenon in summer, but a trend to faster adaptation with light treatment was seen in winter. These observations are likely to be of importance to shift-workers in temperate zones. Further investigations of phase-shifting techniques, such as appropriately timed bright light and administration of melatonin itself, are indicated, particularly in relation to performance at work.
navaltoday Authorities Back to overview,Home naval-today Spanish minesweeper runs aground during search for crashed C-101 aircraft Spanish Navy minesweeper ESPS Turia has stranded on a beach in southeastern Spain while supporting search and rescue operations for the crashed Spanish Air Force C-101 aircraft.Air Force Commander Francisco Marín Núñez died in the aircraft crash on August 26 while the minesweeper ran aground in the early morning hours of August 27.At the time of the stranding, the ship was in the process of recovering a UUV with which it discovered parts of the crashed plane.The ship’s glass fibre-reinforced plastic hull was breached in the accident, resulting in flooding in several compartments. Weather conditions are preventing navy divers from assessing the extent damage on the hull of the minesweeper, it was further said.The navy said it is currently developing a plan for the lifting operation in front of the seaside spit La Manga del Mar Menor which has been closed for the public.The navy expects the weather conditions to improve in the next 24 hours, which will allow it to proceed with the recovery operation. By Dialogo August 03, 2009 Ferrari ace Felipe Massa admitted on Sunday he was lucky to be alive after surviving a 275kph horror crash at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Brazilian was struck by a suspension spring which had worked its way off Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP, resulting in Massa crashing his Ferrari into a tyre barrier in qualifying in Budapest. Massa needed emergency surgery on his fractured skull and spent two days in a medically-induced coma. “I know I’m lucky to be alive,” Massa told the News of the World. “I don’t remember anything about the accident but I will race again.” He explained: “When I woke up I didn’t know why I was in hospital, so I was asking ‘why am I here?’ “I was pulling all the tubes and Eduardo, my brother, tried to stop me – so we had a fight.”The accident was so unlucky but I know I’m lucky to be alive. I don’t remember anything of what happened. “It was my race, so when I awoke from the coma I couldn’t believe it when they told me Lewis (Hamilton) had won and Kimi (Raikkonen) was second.” Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher will take over from Massa behind the wheel of the Ferrari at the next race in Valencia on August 23.
