first_imgThe LYIT campus – could it be a university?Sinn Féin Councillor and general election candidate Gary Doherty says he wants to see a new North West University – with campuses in Derry and Letterkenny.Doherty will be a third candidate for his party in Donegal in next February’s general election when it is rubber-stamped by party colleagues.Cllr Doherty, who himself is a former graduate of University of Ulster Magee, says that a greater cross-border approach to course delivery could have the potential to yield significant economic and societal benefits which, in turn, could strategically advance Irish higher education on an all-island basis. Cllr Doherty said:“LYIT and University of Ulster Magee are two institutions of reputable standing, not only here in the Northwest but internationally. Collectively, they have brought a number of economic and societal benefits to the region as well as having provided a great number of educational opportunities to those wishing to avail of further and higher education locally.”“Notwithstanding this, I believe that there is even greater potential to exploit further benefits from both colleges if a more joined up and collaborative approach to course delivery was employed: this could be facilitated through both LYIT and Magee entering into an Alliance or Cluster agreement.”“I believe that this can be achieved through greater co-operation between the Higher Education Authority, the Department of Education and Skills in the south as well as the Executive’s Department of Employment and Learning in Belfast: each of which have a responsibility in the governance and regulation of higher education on this island.” “In essence, what is needed in order to assist this process is for the government here to explore the possibility of introducing legislation which would act as a legal instrument – without compromising institutional autonomy – to give effect and recognition to such alliances between the relevant institutions while also setting out their core objectives.”“I feel that there is an appetite for such a measure, not only from students and the institutions themselves but also from other key stakeholders including the wider business community. In fact a report compiled in 2009 by Indecon International Economic Consultants, highlighted a need to further augment higher education in the region in order to make it more attractive for high-value added activities such as software development and business services.”“Past experience has taught us that joint initiatives between LYIT and the University of Ulster, such as the MSc in Innovation Management in the Public Services, enables candidates to gain dual accreditation namely an MSc through University of Ulster and a HETAC Level 9 in LYIT, and this is both beneficial to students and attractive to potential employers.”“Taking this all into consideration, I have asked my party colleague Deputy Pearse Doherty to raise this issue with the Minister for Education in the Dáil in which he’ll be asking the Minister what plans the government now has to assist with the development of greater inter-institutional collaboration going forward.”“Potentially, such an alliance could pave the way for the creation of a North West University – something which Sinn Féin has in the past expressed their support for and which would be funded on a cross border basis consisting of twin campuses – this has the potential to bolster higher education provision in the Northwest region as a whole and improve the region’s overall density of higher education attainment.” LETTERKENNY AND DERRY SHOULD ESTABLISH NEW NORTH WEST UNIVERSITY, SAYS ELECTION CANDIDATE was last modified: October 15th, 2015 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:LYITmageeUniversitylast_img
