first_imgOn Boxing Day 2015, the usually quiet roads of Cruit Island will be awoken by the stomping of hundreds of feet taking part in the 4th Annual Darren Mills Memorial Run/Walk.The idea to organise the event came from a quiet conversation over a pint on a Friday night in the Viking House, Kincasslagh in October 2012 where it was suggested that establishing an annual fundraising event over the festive season would serve as an appropriate tribute to Darren who was tragically taken from his wife, family and friends in 2010. With hopes high amongst the organisers for a turnout of 40 people in the inaugural event, registration was overwhelmed when in excess of 200 people turned up on Boxing Day 2012.From this platform, the annual run/walk has now become one of the largest mass-participation charity events in the west-Donegal calendar with an entry of over 250 people taking part last year.To date, the event has raised over €7500 for local charities namely the Dungloe Hospital Patient’s Comfort Fund, the Donegal Hospice, the Day-Centre at the Angle in Dungloe, Scoil Mhuire, Belcruit and the North West Cancer Group. All moneys gathered this year will be split evenly between the Rosses Community Dyslexia Branch – recently established in the Rosses by teachers and parents of children with dyslexia – and towards the painting of St.Mary’s Church, Kincasslagh – where Darren was married and which remains a place with special significance to the Mills family. The main 6k event sees runners and walkers register at Carey’s Viking House before departing from St.Mary’s Hall, crossing the Cruit bridge and continuing down the island as far as Darren’s Memorial monument before returning to the finish line at the Viking House. For the younger participants or those who feel they may not manage the full 6k route, a shorter 1.25k route which follows a loop around by St.Mary’s Chapel and Belcruit N.S is available. While “fun” is the theme of the day, the event also attracts some high-calibre athletes with last year’s podium featuring 2015 World 3000m Masters Steeplechase silver-medalist Ciaran Doherty, winner of “The Race 2015” – Ireland’s toughest endurance event – Sean McFadden and Rosses AC Senior athlete Noel Diver. With a whole host of spot-prizes, a choice of routes to cater for all-comers, the chance to burn off the Christmas pudding while gathering money for two very deserving causes, not to mention the chance to compete for the valuable Darren Mills Memorial Run Shield there is no reason not to come along and support this year’s event.Registration will take place in Carey’s Viking House from 1pm with the run/walk starting at 2:30pm. Refreshments will be served in the Viking afterwards with presentation of prizes at 4pm.For further information please see the Darren Mills Memorial Run/Walk page on facebook @ HUGE EXCITEMENT AHEAD OF FOURTH DARREN MILLS MEMORIAL EVENT was last modified: December 24th, 2015 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img
