Villalba declared winner in recount

first_imgNORWALK – The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s Office confirmed Wednesday that Diana Villalba bested incumbent Gloria Duran by a mere four votes in the November elections to win a board seat at the Los Nietos School District. After a two-day recount, Villalba, 51, came out on top with 909 votes – six more than had previously been tallied. Duran, 68, gained only two extra votes during the recount, bringing her total to 905. said, “This is why the law provides for a recount.” “When a race is extremely close, a re-examination of ballots may find small differences from the initial results, or maybe not,” McCormack said. “But that’s why the law provides for a recount.” As such, Villalba will be among three new board members sworn into the five-member panel at a special board meeting at 7 p.m. today at the district office. The other two election winners were Art Escobedo, 51, and Grisel Vasquez, 44. McCormack said the election results for the Los Nietos district were re-certified Wednesday afternoon, showing Villalba as the third-place winner. Up to that point, Villalba said she didn’t want to let herself believe that she’d won. “I won the first night of the recount, and then the next day, and it’s just been terrible,” Villalba said. “I was happy, but I didn’t want to let myself get happy. But once it was certified and in writing, it was real,” she added. “Before then, I was just sitting here, waiting.” Villalba, Escobedo and Vasquez defeated incumbents Cathy Martinez and Duran, a 16-year board veteran and active community leader. Duran was not able to attend the recount on Monday and Tuesday because she was out of town, and could not be reached for comment Wednesday. The recount was requested by Villalba, who fronted nearly $4,200 from her campaign funds to pay for the two-day process. That money will be refunded to her because the recount ended in her favor, county clerk’s officials said. Conny B.
