Morrison has attended more than 700 Drake football games, 80 Drake Relays, and counts 16 members of his family as Drake alumni. He earned a degree in journalism in 1939. Morrison’s parents, Marion and Leonta, met at Drake in 1902. Paul enrolled in 1935, serving as sports editor of The Times-Delphic and working on the staff of the Quax yearbook. He was a member of Chi Delta fraternity, which is now the current Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter. At Saturday’s party, Morrison was presented with several gifts, including a new Drake letterman’s jacket with a new special “100” patch and a framed Drake Relays’ competitor bib with 100 on it. Following the gifts, the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to Morrison, who spent nearly the entire party greeting guests who stood in a long line to chat with the guest of honor. The day following his retirement, he returned to work as a full-time volunteer for the athletics department, and he continues to punch the clock when health permits. He serves as the Drake Athletics historian, amassing an incredible archive of material dating to Drake’s earliest years. Those archival materials, historically kept in the Fieldhouse, have been transferred to the Cowles Library Archives this year for improved preservation and many items are now available for the public to see on the second floor of Cowles Library. After earning his journalism degree in 1939, he was drafted into the Army, serving in the Pacific during World War II. Upon his return from the war he worked briefly for The Gazette in Cedar Rapids before being hired in 1945 as Drake’s first full-time director of the news bureau. He served as sports information director and athletics business manager during his career, from which he retired in 1986.center_img DES MOINES, Iowa – It was a special day on Saturday, July 22 for the Drake University family as they celebrated “Mr. Drake” Paul F.
