Caribbean and Latin America integration moves closer to becoming a reality

first_imgPhoto credit: realclearworld.comThe integration of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) has moved one step closer to becoming a reality.Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit made these remarks following his attendance at the CELAC summit in Venezuela last week.He said there were several resolutions and declarations passed.“We believe that we are forging ahead with the integration of Latin America and the Caribbean. There are common challenges which must be addressed and we need to find common solutions to these challenges,” he explained.According to the prime minister the issue of security was dealt with in detail.“There is a program in Columbia fighting drugs which is having an impact on us because the people who are going to Columbia are now squeezing themselves into the Caribbean. The question is how we can work together on fighting crime, poverty and literacy. There are opportunities for cooperation and collaboration which can only be achieved through closer integration and both sides recognized that. They realize that the only true way towards addressing some of the challenges is through integration. We have seen how corporation agreements such as ALBA and Petro Caribe have benefited both Venezuela and other member states,” he said.Prime Minister Skerrit says leaders are showing greater commitment thorough integration.“We are excited about the prospects for greater integration. There appears to be a greater willingness on the part of leaders to forge ahead,” he explained.Next year’s summit will be held in Chile.
