KOLKATA, India (CMC):In the space of just four deliveries on Sunday, West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite banished bitter memories that had haunted him for the last five years.Playing in his Twenty20 International debut against Bangladesh in Dhaka back in October 2011, a 23-year-old Brathwaite conceded 14 runs off the penultimate over with the hosts needing 22 off the two last overs, in pursuit of 133.With eight runs left off the final over, Bangladesh got home off the fifth delivery, to deal West Indies a three-wicket defeat and claim victory in the one-off T20 game.DEBUT IN BANGLADESH”I remember my debut in Bangladesh when I didn’t come through for the team and we lost and I made it my business to say Carlos Brathwaite will develop to be a match-winner.”Brathwaite became an instant hero at Eden Gardens as he blasted West Indies to a four-wicket win and to the capture of the 2016 Twenty20 World Cup.With the Windies needing 19 off the last six balls, Brathwaite clattered sixes off the first four deliveries in a stunning finish.”It’s better than a dream. Initially, the plan was just to get bat on ball and run as hard as possible. We knew we couldn’t waste any balls and that was just the first plan,” Brathwaite said afterwards.”Fortunately, I got the first couple of away, that kind of settled the nerves a bit. Then after the third one I knew that all I had to do was get bat on ball on the fourth one and we were world champions. Fortunately, all four went for sixes and here we are, world champions, a treble for West Indies cricket.”Brathwaite finished on 34 not out off 10 deliveries, in an exhilarating 54-run stand with Man-of-the-Match Marlon Samuels, who was unbeaten on 85 off 66 balls at the end.”It’s one of those out-of-body experiences. As a young man you dream of winning a World Cup – probably just winning a game – and to be able to do it among all these legends in T20 cricket, to be able to do it for the people of the Caribbean (is special).” he explained.Brathwaite had earlier contributed with the ball, taking three for 23 as West Indies restricted England to 155 for nine off their 20 overs.
The new council majority, however, appeared to fragment over the firing of former City Manager Chuck Fuentes, who Beilke supported but Armenta later voted to oust. Gallegos-Smith said her election did not mean she will back Beilke in voting on issues. “I’ll make my own decisions. My family started the tradition of community service years ago, so that has brought me here,” she said. “I’m happy to work with anyone on City Council, but my family has been around long before any of them were there,” she said. Gallegos-Smith said her first priority as a councilwoman will be to help bring in a city manager. Other goals are “easy fixes,” she added, such as parking issues in the city. • Photo Galleries: Election day around the Valley | Pasadena and WhittierPICO RIVERA – Culminating a contentious race for control of the City Council, voters Tuesday favored newcomers Gracie Gallegos-Smith and Bob Archuleta, as well as incumbent Gregory Salcido. In semi-official voting results, Gallegos-Smith, Archuleta and Salcido were leading. They were followed by Carlos Garcia and Pete Ramirez. Candidate Martin Morones, 59, a transportation security officer, was running sixth, ahead of county investigator Armijo, 56, early results showed. Gallegos-Smith, 41, and Archuleta, 60, had received heavy support from Councilman Ron Beilke, 47, during their campaign. Beilke’s election in 2005 created a voting bloc on the council that included Ramirez and Councilman David Armenta, 56. “These are things that are minor, but nobody’s listened to these people,” said Gallegos- Smith. “I’m going to make sure those get taken care of.” During the campaign, a top concern among all the candidates was the hiring of a new city manager, which Pico Rivera has been without since the council fired Fuentes in September. “We’ve got to go out and find the best person that knows the community, knows how to deal with federal and state officials and someone that could communicate with citizens of Pico Rivera,” said Archuleta, a county commissioner of veterans affairs. “We’re looking for someone with a lot of vision, a lot of insight to lead the city,” he added. Salcido, 38, who has been in office since 1999, said his focus is on hiring a city manager who is “qualified, experienced and independent.” “That is very beginning of what we do as council members – apart from that we have no greater obligation,” he said. “We have to hire the right people to run the organization. For the last year, we’ve had no one.” Gallegos-Smith has previous experience in public service, having served on the city’s Community Resource Advisory Commission. She also currently was a planning commissioner for Pico Rivera. A vice president of the Franco Entertainment recreation group, Gallegos-Smith has said she wants to provide new recreational venues for local residents. She also favors a plan by Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Norwalk, to transform the Pico Rivera Sports Arena into a series of public athletic fields and picnic areas. Archuleta has also expressed support for Napolitano’s proposed recreation project. email@example.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3024 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. The soulful baritone of Dublin troubadour Declan O’Rourke is in achingly beautiful form in his new album Mag Pai Zai and promises to sound even better live when he plays in Letterkenny later this month. After an absence of three years, the platinum-selling singer/songwriter shows the wait has been worth it with an album of tender, reflective music that showcases his unique voice. In a recent interview, O’Rourke explains the story behind the unusually named album. He said: “It’s a play on words. One of the songs is about these two brothers in New York who hoard everything and there’s a line that says ‘He saw the whole wide world through the magpie’s eye’ and I thought it sounded nice…and oriental.”The song in question is Langley’s Requiem and after listening will stay with you for a long time.O’Rourke produced the album after deciding that the big commerical record labels weren’t for him or his music……. and has described it as more “mature”. The melodies and lyrics in this new work show he has grown as an artist. He said: “I think it’s a little bit more mature. I’ve always produced my own stuff so I know what I’m doing a bit more in the production side of things. It’s warm and sounds a bit more uniform – I had a lot of fun making it and it was quite an easy process.”Other tracks that stand out in the album are Slieve Bloom, The Hardest Fight and Be Brave and Believe and the love song A Little Something.O’Rourke’s songs have made a huge impression on other artists with US sensation Josh Groban covering O’Rourke’s Galileo – the same song Paul Weller said he wished he had written.More recently, Mary Byrne from X-Factor fame has also recorded her version of the song. ‘Mag Pai Zai’ is out now on Rimecoat Records. As part of a nationwide tour, O’Rourke’s Mag Pai Zai Tour is set to play An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny, June 25th. Mexico’s caretaker boss Tuca Ferretti has tried to give opportunities to young players, though those efforts have been somewhat stifled by injuries.Still, with four Europe-based players heading back to join their clubs there will likely be plenty of minutes for players like Pachuca midfielder Victor Guzman and Santos Laguna defender Gerardo Arteaga.Argentina, meanwhile, will keep a few players in the starting XI from the last game but will also give youth a chance.Midfielder Santiago Ascacibar is set to get a chance from the start, along with centre-back Walter Kannemann, who many players on Mexico’s team will know from his time with Atlas. The 27-year-old is seeking just his third cap but is coming off a strong Copa Libertadores campaign with Gremio. There may be a place in the lineup for Inter forward Mauro Icardi and Tottenham winger Erik Lamela, who is looking to nab a spot on next year’s Copa America squad after a long injury absence kept him out of the national team.
