Young told the Daily Observer in an interview at the Beaches and Waterways Project that the project could not have come at a better time, and expressed the workers’ appreciation to President Sirleaf, Commissioner Binyah Kesselly and former project manager Cecelia Cuffy-Brown for the initiative, and how it has been handled.Commissioner Kesselly had described the project as “reclaiming our beaches one community at a time.”President Sirleaf declared that she “wants to make Liberia a maritime nation by keeping our beaches clean, healthy and attractive” through the Beaches & Waterways Project. The project now has an annual budget to be managed by the Ministry of Youth & Sports. The army of contract workers has helped reclaim Monrovia’s beaches and also reduced a number of preventable diseases in slum communities, residents told the Daily Observer.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Paternity of Smith’s baby still an issue for courts

first_imgStern was living with Smith at the time of her death. He and the baby, Dannielynn, reside in the Bahamas. – Associated Press Newsom’s date says sorry for comments An aspiring actress dating San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom offered a public apology for referring to the married ex-employee with whom the mayor had an affair as a woman with a “checkered history” and “bad news.” Jennifer Siebel, 32, apologized the same day she posted disparaging remarks on a local Web blog about Ruby Rippey-Tourk, Newsom’s former appointments secretary and the wife of a longtime political aide. The mayor acknowledged and apologized for the affair with Rippey-Tourk on Feb. 1 after her husband, Alex Tourk, learned of it and quit his job as director of the mayor’s re-election campaign. Siebel’s online postings came after she told the San Francisco Chronicle: “If people did research into the scandal … the woman is the culprit. Alex Tourk is a nice man and it saddens me that his wife did that to him.” In her blog post, Siebel described herself as “a total woman’s woman” and said: “I just wish as women that some of us had more respect for ourselves and didn’t always throw ourselves at the men,” she wrote. The attempt at damage control only produced more reproaches of Siebel in the blogosphere, however, and she issued the apology a few hours later. The mayor’s office declined comment. – Associated Press 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! A lawyer for one of three men claiming to be the father of Anna Nicole Smith’s baby asked a judge Tuesday to order the late Playboy model’s partner, Howard K. Stern, to come to California and provide a DNA sample. Attorney Debra Opri, who represents Smith’s former boyfriend Larry Birkhead, said after a closed hearing that she wants the DNA to determine if Stern is the baby’s father. His name is on the little girl’s birth certificate. “Put up or shut up, that’s what we’re asking for,” Opri said outside court. Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider refused to make Stern a part of the paternity court action but said he would review the matter in two weeks after he considers the law more closely, Opri said. last_img read more
