Everton climbed out of the Premier League’s relegation zone after coming from two goals down to win 3-2 against Watford, which missed a penalty in a 13-minute period of stoppage time at Goodison Park on Sunday.Everton looked set for a sixth straight loss in all competitions – and fourth under caretaker manager David Unsworth – after goals by Richarlison and Christian Kabasele put Watford 2-0 ahead by the 64th minute.Oumar Niasse pulled a goal back in the 67th, substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed home an equalizer in the 74th and Leighton Baines converted a penalty in the first minute of stoppage time to complete the turnaround.Tom Cleverley, a former Everton player, had an opportunity to make it 3-3 in the 11th minute of added-on time but the midfielder dragged a penalty wide after Richarlison was tripped.A first win in nine matches lifted Everton from 19th to 15th in the standings and brought a dose of positivity ahead of the international break, in which the club is expected to make a decision on the permanent successor to the fired Ronald Koeman. The thrilling win may have put Unsworth back in the frame for the job, with the interim manager having expressed his interest in the vacancy.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys had one of their best (if not the best) ground performances of the season against the TCU Horned Frogs in their 31-6 victory last Saturday. It has been a long time since the Pokes have been able to lean on the ground game, but the Cowboys did just that, and they averaged a stunning 7.4 yards per carry against one of the better defenses in the Big 12.So why has the run game improved? Well, it’s actually quite simple. Yes, the Xs and Os behind it are notable, but there’s only so much to analyze. The Cowboy coaching staff has put together an effective two-back run scheme. But the improvement at personnel has been the biggest reason for the team’s recent success on the ground. When OSU first introduced the Cowboy Back, the Cowboys frequently used a gap power scheme (man-to-man blocking, basically), but the problem was that the line couldn’t block it well. Additionally, with only one possible point of attack, the back was limited in where he could go.But now, the Cowboys have completely revamped the run game, and have turned to zone blocking to not only make it easier for the lineman but to also feature their talented backs.Just because a team is zone-heavy doesn’t mean that the run game is simple or predictable. Through the zone, the Cowboys used a number of different plays to keep the defense off-balanced.They used a strong-side zone:A zone to the weak side (which is a tendency breaker and often caught the defense by surprise):And a lead draw play:Additionally, they ran a lead zone with split backs:And used a devastating wham play which, at one point in the fourth quarter, OSU used three times in a row for a total of 53 yards:And don’t forget that quarterback Mason Rudolph has been used more and more in the run game, specifically in the red zone and short-yardage situations (notice that the play below is the same as the play above with a read on the play-side end, i.e. was specifically called for Rudolph).Although this is a chalk talk article, it would be unfair to not give credit to the people who have made this possible. As we’ve seen in the past, coaches can scheme and strategize all they want, but if their players can’t execute, then it’s all for naught. This year, though, the offensive line has improved immensely. The running backs, and more specifically Justice Hill and Chris Carson, have thrived in the Cowboy run game as of late. Finally, the coaching staff has intelligently taken one base zone play and built a run offense off of it, and because the line really has only one or two plays to practice, they have been able to become a more than respectable zone run team. One or even two years ago, the Cowboys were lucky to surpass 100 yards on the ground. Now, things have clearly changed, and it appears like this ground attack won’t be regressing any time soon. Mason Rudolph’s poor performance on Saturday was not the only reason Oklahoma State lost in Bedlam, but it was a big one. Rudolph was 11/25 for 186 yards and no TDs. He missed receivers all over the field. Rudolph did run the ball quite well, which was a bright spot, but all in all it was probably the worst performance we have seen from No. 2 since the Texas game last year. Here is Pro Football Focus on his grade.Rudolph seemed to have problems all game with trying to get a grip on the football, as it seemed to be slipping out of his hands every time he threw … [he] was 0-of-7 on passes between 10 and 20 yards. Rudolph found himself under pressure on 8 dropbacks (out of 29) and failed to complete any of his five attempts, while also taking two sacks. While this was a tough game for Rudolph, it shouldn’t take away from the phenomenal season he had in which he graded out at 89.5 overall, among the best college quarterbacks in the country. [PFF]I would blame the rain or the conditions but … well, did you watch Baker Mayfield? No, this one is on Rudolph. For all the adulation he (rightfully) received for winning the 2014 game, he has to take the blame for this one (and he did).“Just a rough day,” said Rudolph after Bedlam. “Honestly, I’ll take all the responsibility for the lack of production, especially in the second half. Obviously, it needed to be better. [My performance was] not great at times. I think I try to do a good job managing the ball in the first half and taking care of the ball and pulling the ball when we needed to but I think our guys up front played well all game and I’ve just got to be more productive … I think we had a great game plan. I think it was just a question of execution on my part and we’ve just got to be better.”As for whether the weather affected him, Rudolph didn’t make excuses.“We kind of practiced a little bit all week in preparation for it, but there are certain times when you’re going tempo and the ball is a little more wet at the beginning of the drive than it is when you’re not going tempo,” said Rudolph. “But once again, no excuses. We’ve just got to be consistent.”Again, no bigger fan of No. 2 than me. He will be fine. He is 21-6 as a starter and just lead OSU to back-to-back 10-win* seasons. To go Gundy on you … in the society we live in, there is maybe no bigger issue than the one that befalls individuals who cannot hold two truths in their minds at the same time. Rudolph can both have been awful in Bedlam (he was) and still be a great college quarterback (he is).The road issues are a real thing, and we will dive into them more as the season winds down. And I suppose the silver lining here is that there is a sub-zero chance Rudolph will declare for the NFL Draft now so we get another year of him with all those weapons. And one more shot at winning Bedlam.

The Cowboys had an ugly quarter followed by a solid second half.Oklahoma State beat Tulsa 40-21 on Saturday at H.A. Chapman Stadium to move to 3-0 on the year. The game brought plenty of talking points, and here is a breakdown of what OSU coach Mike Gundy said in his post-game presser.• He starts with shouting out the defensive coaches’ adjustments in the second half and the players executing those adjustments on the field.• “They got after us pretty good in the second quarter. Got us tired and ran the ball down our throats.”• Tulsa was in an “all or nothing defense” with all the press man the Golden Hurricane played. They were either going to make a big play or give one up.• “I’m gonna look into the unsportsmanlike penalties. We’re getting conflict of interest. Our guys are saying one thing, they’re saying another, being the referees. I’m assuming the referees are right, but we’ll find out what happened on those.”• Gundy said he called the play that led to Kolby Harvell-Peel’s fourth-and-goal sack. He said he gets involved in defensive calls “about twice a game.”• Taking away the two unsportsmanlike penalties, OSU would’ve given up 50 penalty yards, a number Gundy said isn’t the end of the world. But those are the type of penalties he talks about with discipline.• Gundy said Jayden Jernigan’s unsportsmanlike was “some kind of verbal communication.”• The bare bones of the defensive adjustment at halftime was adding an extra body to the box.• Tulsa was doing exactly what it wanted to do in the second quarter in controlling the clock and running the ball.• Spencer Sanders played “OK.” “He got flustered in the second quarter a little bit, and I had to calm him down. Very competitive. Wanted to do a couple things different, and we really couldn’t do it based on what they were doing. We got him calmed down, and then he was good.”• Sanders’ touchdown run was him improvising. Gundy said Tulsa “house blitzed” a few times, and that time Sanders saw it and got to the edge in time.• “It’s sad. Mr. Pickens and I went head-to-head a lot. He won most all of them. But I had a lot of respect for him, and I think he respected me. Between Mr. Pickens and President (Burns) Hargis, Coach (Mike) Holder, and myself, we won a hell of a lot of football games and been successful. He’s been his own boss for 70 years, and I’ve been mine for 15. So sometimes you have confrontation, but I have a ton of respect. “It’s kinda sad, ya know. It’s sad knowing that he’s not there. It really is, and it feels weird. We’ll have a couple nice tributes to him, and them I’m sure we’ll have some stuff at Karsten Creek and on campus for him to remember his legacy forever.”• OSU has depth at on the defensive line, just not experience.• On a day like Saturday helping Sanders in the long term: “Those things will help him as we go along. Won’t be the last time. He wants to win. He wants to be good, so he’ll get frustrated. But he calmed down really well. Didn’t lose his thought process, in my opinion. He’ll get better as we go along.”• On if he was tempted to start warming Dru Brown up: “(Sanders is) frustrated with success, not frustrated in a negative way. So, you let him go, put him back out there. The next series is when he took off against the house blitz and he scored, so he’s fine.”• Time will tell if Chuba Hubbard is one of the elite running backs of the Gundy era.• Tylan Wallace basically had nine catches for 178 yards because of the pass interference calls he drew.• Gundy said he feels better after Tulsa than in the other games because of how well the defense played in the second half.• OSU has a lot of work to do going into the Texas game.• On Kansas and K-State picking up early wins on the weekend: “It’s good for the Big 12. It’s good for all the fans and the media and not good for the coaches.” While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member. Social proof is the powerful idea that if we think everyone else is acting in a certain way, we’re likely to act that way, too. I’m 30 years old and everything you go through in football, you take something from it. “Way back as a child playing football on the beach, you dream of being a player representing your national team on the big stage – and now I get to be the captain. “It’s something money can’t buy.” Ahead of their campaign beginning this weekend, Brazil have been unable to escape reminders of a humiliating 7-1 loss to Germany in the semi-finals of the tournament on home soil four years ago.Marcelo, though, is adamant he does not dwell on the extraordinary thrashing in Belo Horizonte.”These are things that happen in football,” he said.”Of course I wish it were different. There’s no trauma, if there was trauma I wouldn’t play football any more, I would have retired. “I look for a goal and I try to keep my focus on it. The World Cup is another challenge, tomorrow there’s another one. “To not get hurt is one, to train without pain is a challenge, to change from my club to the national team. Life is made up of challenges. “There’s no trauma. Even the good things don’t go to my head and I don’t let the bad things affect me.”

World Cup Belgium players raring to go after England rest – Martinez Iain Strachan 00:27 7/2/18 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Getty Images World Cup Belgium v Japan Japan Belgium The Red Devils boss has a hungry squad ready to face Japan in the last 16 after giving many of his key men a break in a final group stage fixture Belgium coach Roberto Martinez says all of his players are desperate to be on the pitch ahead of the World Cup round-of-16 clash with Japan in Rostov-on-Don.Having sealed passage from Group G with a match remaining, Martinez made sweeping changes to his starting XI for the 1-0 win over a similarly fringe England team in Kaliningrad.Finishing top with a 100 per cent record earned Belgium a meeting with the Samurai Blue at Rostov Arena, where a host of first-choice stars, including Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku, are likely to return for kick-off. And the ones who were rested are waiting to get back on the pitch. “The players are ready to get the rhythm as fast as they can.” Belgium defeated Japan 1-0 in a friendly in November, but Akira Nishino has since replaced the sacked Vahid Halilhodzic at the helm of the team.”The biggest difference is the change of coach,” Martinez said of his team’s opponents.”In essence they are exactly the same, great energy, organised. “This Japan team shows there is a generation with a very good age. A lot of experience, they’ve played in Europe’s big leagues for a long time. “They know what it takes to win. [Takashi] Inui had a fantastic time in Eibar. They know what they’re doing on the pitch. “We’ll have to be concentrating at all time because of their dynamic approach and the amount of players they can accumulate in both boxes.”Martinez confirmed Belgium have been practising penalties, but should the game go down to a shootout, the Spaniard knows no amount of training can replicate the pressure his players will be under.”I think you have to be prepared for everything,” he said.”It’s important not to underestimate the occasion. “The players have been practicing but nothing will prepare you for taking the penalty that will get you through to the next phase in the knockout stages of the World Cup.”
Mohamed Salah scored one goal and made another as Liverpool won 2-0 at Wolves to guarantee they will be top of the Premier League on Christmas Day.The leaders toiled for much of Friday’s clash at a sodden Molineux, with in-form Wolves having won their last three league games to move up to seventh. But Salah’s 11th Premier League goal of the season, meaning the Egypt star is now leading the race for the Golden Boot, set up Liverpool’s sixth straight win in all competitions. His 58th-minute replacement Adam Lallana was then kept out by Rui Patricio.Liverpool clinched the points when Salah’s dipping centre from the right was finished brilliantly by a stretching Van Dijk, and although Georginio Wijnaldum shot wide in stoppage time the Reds still piled pressure on champions City.BIG Virgil loved that one!! #WOLLIV pic.twitter.com/cTvnP5vKUG— Liverpool FC (@LFC) December 21, 2018 What does it mean? Keita injury a blow for leadersLiverpool march on but Jurgen Klopp will be concerned about Keita as the midfielder was clearly in pain when replaced by Lallana. Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are already injured, while Trent Alexander-Arnold watched from the stands with supporters. And while the Reds will be top at Christmas, the last team to claim that number one spot without going on to win the Premier League title were Liverpool in 2013-14.Salah makes the difference againLiverpool continue to rely heavily on star man Salah, but he keeps delivering. With five goals in his last four appearances, Salah is hitting top form again after a slow start to the season. The cross for Van Dijk’s strike was a peach and Salah’s celebrations were no longer muted.Traore target practice neededWolves, without Diogo Jota due to a hamstring injury, threatened throughout but two of their best chances came in the first 10 minutes and Traore failed to test Alisson with either effort. Preferred to rising star Morgan Gibbs-White, who hit the side-netting late on after coming on as a substitute, Traore needs to be more reliable in front of goal as his end product is often lacking.Key Opta Facts11 – Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has now scored more @premierleague goals than any other player this season (11).
