Film Study: Why Kenny Hill Is TCU’s Biggest X-Factor

first_imgJust two years ago, Texas A&M’s sophomore phenom Kenny Hill was one of the biggest names in college football. Now, after sitting out for a season, the talented yet occasionally erratic signal caller leads a TCU team that is riding high following a 62-22 victory at Baylor.Hill is still a skilled quarterback, but his current numbers don’t come close to his production at A&M. This season, the junior has thrown for almost 2,700 yards and 14 touchdowns but has also thrown 10 interceptions. Here’s a quick analysis on the Horned Frogs’ starting QB.Hill has a rocket arm and frequently gives his receivers one-on-one opportunities down the field.oneononetdHe is also a gifted runner and has seven rushing touchdowns on the season.  He is often used both in the read option game.qbreaduseAnd in the red zone on simple sprint zone plays like this one.qbsprintWhen it comes to prototypes, Hill is the epitome of a gunslinger; he never plays conservatively. He is also a true dual-threat quarterback, and he uses his feet to extend plays and put pressure on the defense. Sometimes that produces some awe-inspiring plays.scrambletdBut Hill can occasionally get antsy in the pocket and make mistakes.antsypickAnd he has a tendency to stare down receivers.pickSo why is this important? Well, as we’ve seen, Hill is a skilled passer when given time, and he has proven the ability to make plays and scramble outside of the pocket. But sometimes defensive pressure and his aggressive mentality lead him to make mistakes. If the Cowboys keep the same defensive philosophy that they’ve used in the past couple of games, Hill will just have to sit back and command an offensive system that is designed to pick apart soft zone defenses. If the Cowboys play aggressively, and they try to confuse and pressure Hill, they could effectively rattle the junior and end up forcing a turnover or two (which has happened a lot to TCU this year).screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-1-53-56-pmHow aggressive do you think OSU’s defensive game plan will be?
